One of the best foodie experiences we’ve ever had? Drinking wine in Myanmar at Red Mountain Estate!
One of our favorite trips we have ever taken was our honeymoon around Thailand, Cambodia and Myanmar! Seriously, looking through all of our photos (we took over 6000 during our month-long trip!), my heart aches just a little… I want to go back!
Every moment was magical and we had so many unforgettable experiences. Not surprisingly, many of our favorite honeymoon moments revolved around sharing food – and wine.
The last thing we thought we would do while in Myanmar was visit a vineyard. Living in France, we are lucky to be able to have gorgeous vineyards within a couple of hours drive from our home in Paris. We spend quite a bit of time in Burgundy and one of our favorite activities is to go wine tasting and to stock up on some delicious Chablis and Epineuil to bring back to our collection in Paris. We never thought we’d be tasting wine in Myanmar though…
As you know, we love looking for original and delicious food experiences when we travel. In Paris, we love to discover new places and foods such as when we went to ate golden cannelés at Casse Noisette and darling pastry choux at Popelini.
Wine in Myanmar? That exists?
When we travel, we always ask where we can go to have authentic food experiences. When we arrived in Inle Lake in Myanmar, the lovely lady at our hotel was thrilled to tell us that we could taste French wine not far from the hotel. A quick taxi ride and we were in an actual French vineyard!
We were thrilled to discover that there is a vineyard in Myanmar that produces French wine. We had to go and check it out!
Sure enough, you can have French wine in Myanmar… this must be for those of use who live in France and can’t go a couple of weeks without it… 😉
The sunlight over the vines, the kind people, the surreal experience of sipping French wine in Myamar… It is truly unforgettable and one of our absolute favorite memories from our trip.
Wine in Myanmar?
The wines at Red Mountain Estate are French wines. Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir… it’s all there. They even have their own “Rosé d’Inle”!
You can purchase bottles of wine at Red Mountain Estate to bring home for family and friends or as a special souvenir for yourself to enjoy at a later time. We would have bought several bottles if we had had enough room in our luggage, but we were backpacking during our entire one month trip and so we had to be careful about how much we bought along the way.
This white wine is the perfect wine to pair with a Burmese chicken curry. Make your own Burmese chicken curry with turmeric, garlic and ginger at home using our recipe.

Thanks Tom! I’m so glad you liked it. If Sarah loves wine, then she would really like it. Even if you’re not a big fan of wine, it’s a fun experience to see a vineyard in Myanmar! Cheers and thanks for stopping by!

Alana this is a surprising post. I’d never think you’d visit a winery in Myanmar, even with the nation opening things up so much over the past few years. Seems a bit decadent to me….from the Burmese perspective lol 😉 Neat stuff and hey you can’t go wrong with French and Spanish shipments on the grape vine side of things. Go to the best to start off your venture on the right foot.
