Chinese Cantonese Chicken

Restaurant-style Cantonese Chicken is a simple and delicious Chinese dinner recipe you will make again and again. Chicken, oyster sauce, soy sauce, rice vinegar, sugar, molasses, garlic, onion, chicken stock and cornstarch come together to make this delightfully fragrant dish. Top with sesame seeds and fresh cilantro and serve with rice for the perfect dinner for two or double the recipe to feed a family of four. Make our Chinese Kou Lou Yuk (sweet and sour pork) next!

What is Cantonese chicken?

Cantonese or Yue cuisine originates from Guangdong Province (SE China around Hong Kong), and it is the most widely served style of Chinese cuisine in the world. This Cantonese chicken recipe is served in restaurants around the world.

It is a sticky chicken dish with a luscious deep brown sauce that is best served with rice or noodles.

Cantonese chicken ingredients

  • Chicken breasts
  • Oyster sauce
  • Dark soy sauce
  • Rice vinegar
  • Sugar
  • Molasses
  • Garlic cloves
  • Fresh ginger
  • Onion
  • Chicken stock
  • Cornstarch
  • Sesame seeds
  • Fresh cilantro
  • Olive oil
  • Rice or noodles (to serve)

How to make cantonese chicken

  • Step 1 – Cut the chicken breasts into strips.
  • Step 2 – Mix the oyster sauce, soy sauce, vinegar, sugar and molasses in a bowl.
  • Step 3 – Add the chicken and let marinate for 30 minutes in the fridge.
  • Step 4 – Heat olive oil in a casserole on medium heat.
  • Step 5 – Add the onion and cook for 5 minutes.
  • Step 6 – Add the garlic and ginger and cook for a minute.
  • Step 7 – Add the chicken and cook for 2 minutes on each side.
  • Step 8 – Pour in the chicken stock, bring to a boil, reduce the heat and simmer for 7 minutes.
  • Step 9 – Put the cornstarch in a bowl and mix with 4 tablespoons of chicken stock.
  • Step 10 – Pour in the casserole.
  • Step 11 – Turn the heat to high heat.
  • Step 12 – Cook until the sauce thickens, while stirring.
  • Step 13 – Top with cilantro and sesame seeds and serve with rice.

Ingredients

  • 2 chicken breasts
  • 1 tbsp of oyster sauce
  • 2 tbsp of dark soy sauce
  • 1 tsp of rice vinegar
  • 2 tsp of sugar
  • 1 tsp of molasses
  • 2 garlic cloves (chopped) 
  • 1 inch of fresh ginger (chopped)
  • 1 onion (chopped)
  • 1 cup of chicken stock
  • 1 tbsp of cornstarch 
  • 1 tsp sesame seeds 
  • Fresh cilantro
  • Olive oil
  • Rice

Instructions

  1. Cut the chicken breasts into strips.
  2. Mix the oyster sauce, soy sauce, vinegar, sugar and molasses in a bowl.
