The best honey mustard recipe

Jump to Recipe·Print Recipe

Honey mustard, you are dreamy. Mustard, honey, apple cider vinegar and mustard seeds come together to make the perfect, creamy sauce for your sandwiches, bagels, salads and more. In my opinion, this is the absolute best honey mustard you will ever try! It is so easy to make you’ll never buy store-bought again. If you love this dipping sauce, you will also love our whiskey BBQ sauce.

What is honey mustard and why is it the best sauce?

It is the most mind blowing creamy, flavorful, sweet, spicy sauce made from a combination of really simple ingredients like honey, mustard, vinegar, and mustard seeds.

Where was honey mustard invented?

As the story goes, honey mustard was initially developed for Chick-fil-A in the 1980s because they wanted to create the perfect dipping sauce. They definitely succeeded in our opinion. This gourmet version of the sauce is the best!

What’s in it?

Honey mustard can vary a bit but our version calls for the ingredients below.

  • Strong yellow mustard (we love strong, Maille Dijon mustard)
  • Honey ( we love Knobel bush honey from Australia)
  • Apple cider vinegar
  • Mustard seeds

If you want to make your own mustard too, follow the steps in this video

How to make honey mustard step by step

This recipe could not be any easier!

  • Step 1 – Prepare the strong yellow mustard, honey, apple cider vinegar and mustard seeds.
  • Step 2 –Mix everything together and voila, you have your homemade honey mustard sauce or dressing!

Tips to make the perfect honey mustard

  • Use a strong yellow mustard for best results.
  • We mix in mustard seeds to give the sauce added flavour and texture. Alternatively, you can skip the mustard seeds and have a smoother sauce or you can use moutarde à l’ancienne that will already have mustard seeds incorporated.

Add your own twist to this recipe

  • Add olive oil to make honey mustard olive oil dressing
  • Add curry sour cream to make creamy curry honey mustard sauce

What does honey mustard go with? Recipe ideas!

Everything! Ok, maybe not everything, must most things. It’s hard to go wrong.

You can use the sauce as a salad dressing, as a dipping sauce or on burgers, sandwiches and bagels.

How to make honey mustard with yellow mustard

We love our honey mustard to have a strong, spicy flavor. In order to get that sharp bite, use a strong yellow mustard, such as a classic Dijon mustard.

What is the best honey mustard for sandwiches?

This recipe is perfect for sandwiches because it’s nice and thick and creamy.

Is this a no dairy honey mustard recipe?

Yup! No dairy here. This honey mustard is naturally dairy free because it is made without mayo.

Is this honey mustard sauce gluten free?

This recipe is naturally gluten free!

Is honey mustard vegan?

This recipe is naturally vegan because it is 100% dairy free.

Is honey mustard dairy free?

This recipe is naturally dairy free!

Can honey mustard go bad?

No! This sauce won’t really go back. We don’t recommend making it and keeping it for a year but you can keep it for a while without any problem. (At least 3-5 days easily). Honestly though, this sauce is so easy to make, you can prepare it fresh every time in just a few minutes.

More dipping sauces we love

  • Whiskey BBQ Sauce
  • Greek Orange Yogurt Salad Dressing
  • 3 Ingredient French Vinaigrette

The best honey mustard recipe!

I’m sure this recipe is about to become your absolute favorite.

If you love this recipe, please give it 5 stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
