Wine tasting in Vienna at the Schlumberger Wine Cellar
When we started planning our trip to Vienna, we knew we wanted to learn more about the food and wine culture in the city.
In addition to participating in experiences like a horse drawn carriage ride in Vienna and testing the best cafes the city has to offer, we had to try the best wine tasting and wine cellar tour in town!
Austria has a rich wine culture with some wine even being produced within the city limits. Maybe add a visit to a Viennese heuriger to your list of things to do in Vienna as well!

History of Schlumberger wines
Schlumberger’s story starts with a love story which I love, because as you know, love stories are my favorite!
The wine company was created in 1842 by German-born Alwin Schlumberger after he fell in love with his Austrian wife, Sophie Kirchner, and moved to Austria to begin their life together.
He was trained in Champagne production at the famous Ruinart domain in France, so when he moved to Austria, he decided to lean into his knowledge of Champagne production and set up shop!
He visited several different wine regions throughout Austria before deciding to create his own winery to produce sparkling wines in Bad Vöslau, about a 40-minute drive from Vienna.
Schlumberger wines have been the wine of choice for the Imperial aristocracy and Austrian society since the 1800s, so you will be in good company as you sip away!

The Schlumberger Wine Cellar Tour
The Schlumberger wine cellar tour takes you through the fascinating history of the Schlumberger wine house as you walk through the beautiful wine cellar.
Learn about the entire production process from grape to bottle as you embark on this 45-minute tour.
See wine bottles at different stages of production.
I won’t go into all the of the details of the stages of sparkling wine production here, because I want you to learn about it during the tour, but it is really interesting. We enjoyed the way the information was visually laid out in a clear and beautiful way throughout the tour,in addition to all of the information we received from the audio guide.

Sparkling Schlumberger Wine
Schlumberger wines are produced using a traditional Champagne production method combined with Alwin Schlumberger’s special touch and adaptations.
Schlumberger was the first to plant and cultivate Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in Austria. These wines are still available today, they are the red wines, “Privatissimo” and “Privatkeller”.
Schlumberger’s wine were initially called “Champagne”, but following the treaty of Saint Germain in 1919, only sparkling wines made using 100% of ingredients from the Champagne region of France could carry the name “Champagne”. From then on, Schlumberger wines became known as “sparkling wines made using the Methode Champenoise” (which means the Champagne method).
Again, I don’t want to give too much away (I want you to be able to learn about the process during the tour!) so I will just share some photos below to give you a sneak peek.

We really enjoyed trying a selection of delicious, crisp sparkling Rosés (and one white wine)!

There is a beautiful area where you can sit and enjoy your wine tasting after the tour.

Schlumber Wine Tasting Options
If you participate in the Rosé Tour like we did, you will try 3 full glasses of sparkling wine : Rosé Brut Klassik, Pinot Noir Brut Reserve and Rosé Secco.
Schlumberger also offers other wine tastings (all tasting include the self-guided audio tour as well).
Tour Options
- Sparkling Tour : one glass of Schlumberger’s famous white sparkling wine, Schlumberger Sparkling Brut
- Classic Tour : three glasses of Schlumberger’s sparkling wine (two white and one rose), Sparkling Brut, Gruner Veltliner and Rosé Brut
- Connaisseur Tour : three glasses of Schlumberger’s sparkling wine (two white and one rose), Schlumberger Sparkling Brut, Pinot Noir Brut Reserve and Chardonnay Brut Reserve
The Schlumberger Boutique
After your wine tasting, you’ll have the chance to visit the little boutique where you can purchase a selection of sparkling Schlumberger wines to bring home.
We bought a bottle of the Rosé Brut Klassik which turned to be our favorite sparkling rose that we tried during the wine tasting.
We love bringing wine home from our trips and drinking it at a later date while reminiscing about our travel adventures. A beautiful bottle of wine makes a fantastic souvenir or gift to bring home.
If you live in Europe and are traveling by train like we typically do or by car, bringing home wine is a breeze.
If you are flying, it can be easy to bring home a bottle or two as well. In that case, buy some bubble wrap (typically available at post offices around Europe) and wrap the bottle with 2-3 layers of bubble wrap. Remember to pack it in your checked luggage. If you are traveling with carry-on only, look into having the bottles sent home to you.

How to get to the Schlumberger wine cellars
Getting to the Schlumberger wine cellars from central Vienna is simple.
We took the metro to get there. The closest metro stop is Spittelau (U4 or U6 lines), then just cross the street and you’ll be there quickly.
The tram stop is also Spittelau (line 4). If traveling by bus, the stop is Spittelau (line 37A). If traveling by Hop On / Hop Off bus, you can also reach the Schlumberger Wine Cellar easily. The stop is called Schlumberger / Spittelau (Green Line).
You could also walk there (it takes about an hour to walk there from St. Stephen’s Cathedral located in for example). We typically always choose to walk everywhere when we travel, however we did not have enough time to walk there the day we visited.
