What are halloumi fries?

Halloumi fries are made with a firm, white, sheep’s milk Cypriot cheese called halloumi. The cheese is breaded and fried to make halloumi fries (also called halloumi sticks).

Homemade halloumi fries ingredients

  • Halloumi cheese
  • Breadcrumbs
  • Za’atar
  • Egg
  • Olive oil (for frying)

Halloumi fries

How to make halloumi fries, step by step

The cheese is cut into fries, dipped in egg, dipped in breadcrumbs mixed with za’atar, dipped in the egg again, dipped in the breadcrumbs one more time, then fried in olive oil in a frying pan.

  • Step 1 – Cut the halloumi cheese into fries (rectangles).
  • Step 2 – Mix the za’atar and breadcrumbs.
  • Step 3 – Pour the olive oil into a small frying pan (6″/20cm) (there should be enough to cover the halloumi cheese fries about half way, but not submerge them in olive oil).
  • Step 4 – Dip the halloumi cheese fries in the egg.
  • Step 5 – Dip in breadcrumbs and za’atar mixture.
  • Step 6 – Dip in the egg again.
  • Step 7 – Dip in the breadcrumbs and za’atar mixture one more time.
  • Step 8 – Fry the halloumi cheese sticks in the frying pan, for approximately 30 seconds on each side, 2 minutes total.

Can you fry halloumi?

Yes, you can fry it breaded for this homemade halloumi fries recipe or even on its own (see recommended halloumi recipes below).

Halloumi fries

How to fry halloumi cheese without melting

We posted this recipe on Instagram and received questions about keeping halloumi cheese from melting as you fry it. Not to worry, halloumi cheese naturally holds together as it heats making it the perfect cheese to bread and fry. When you first buy halloumi you will notice that it is firm and compact. It is so resistant that you can actually put it directly on the barbecue to heat it.

How to pan fry halloumi cheese

Pan frying halloumi cheese couldn’t be easier! To make these halloumi fries, you will need a classic frying pan (we used this one). You will need to add enough olive oil to the frying pan to cover the halloumi cheese about half way. Pan fried halloumi sticks are a bit lighter and less oily than deep fried halloumi sticks.

How long to fry halloumi cheese

To make this recipe, you will need to pan fry each side of the halloumi stick for 30 seconds (2 minutes total).

Best way to fry halloumi

We recommend pan frying, rather than deep frying the halloumi cheese as explained above.

Keto halloumi fries? Are halloumi fries keto?

Yes, good news, these halloumi fries are naturally keto friendly!

Halloumi fries

Where to buy halloumi fries in the UK

We definitely recommend making these homemade halloumi fries, but if you must buy them, these are some of the places where you can find them.

Oli Baba’s in Camden, London created the original deep fried halloumi fries in 2014. We definitely recommend going to try them if you are in London.

(You can also find frozen versions to prepare at home at Aldi, Nando’s and ASDA.)

Notes

We don’t often fry food, but when we do (and it is worth it for these incredible halloumi fries!), we make sure to open the windows of our kitchen so that our apartment doesn’t smell like oil afterwards (especially important for small living spaces).
