French Tomato Tart

French tomato tart is the perfect dinner dish made from puff pastry, heirloom tomatoes, Emmental cheese, chives and mustard. If you love French vegetarian cooking like we do, this is about to become one of your favorite recipes! It’s one of the best fresh tomato tart recipes os all time!

French tomato tart ingredients

This easy tomato tart calls for a handful of simple ingredients.

  • Shortcrust pastry
  • French mustard
  • Grated Emmental cheese (or your fave cheese)
  • Medium tomatoes
  • Fresh chives
  • Olive oil

How to make a French tomato tart step by step

  • Step 1 – Preheat oven to 400°F (210°C).
  • Step 2 – Line a quiche pan with the puff pastry.
  • Step 3 – Make small holes in the pastry using a fork to keep the quiche from swelling as it cooks.
  • Step 4 – Top with parchment paper and baking beans.
  • Step 5 – Bake for 15 minutes.
  • Step 6 – Remove the shortcrust pastry from the oven and remove the baking beans and parchment paper.
  • Step 7 – Spread the mustard over the quiche crust.
  • Step 8 – Add the grated Emmental cheese and sliced tomato.
  • Step 9 – Top with 2 tablespoons of grated cheese.
  • Step 10 – Season with salt and pepper.
  • Step 11 – Bake for 20 minutes.
  • Step 12 – Sprinkle chopped chives over the tart before serving.

Tips to make a French tomato tart

  • Choose the right tomatoes! We love heirloom tomatoes but feel free to choose your favorite tomatoes for this simple tomato tart. Learn more about French tomato varieties if you are curious about the tomatoes available to us here in France!
  • Choose a cheese that melts well. We used Emmental cheese for this fresh tomato tart recipe but you could use cheddar or mozzarella or any cheese that you love that melts well.

Make this Fresh tomato tart your own

  • A traditional Provencal tomato tart is vegetarian but you could top the savory tart with chopped chorizo or other meat.
  • Add a little hot pepper, or Cayenne pepper in keeping with the French spirit, to make this baked tomato tart spicy.
  • Make a zucchini tomato tart by adding zucchini into the recipe.

What to serve with a French tart?

When it comes to serving this healthy tomato tart, you have lots of side options.

  • Serve with a green salad topped with French vinaigrette.
  • For added veggies, serve with Provencal ratatouille.

We used Emmental cheese for this recipe but you could use cheddar, mozzarella or your favorite grated cheese.

How long will this tart last?

This tart is incredibly tasty so I doubt there will be leftovers, but just in case there are, you can keep the tart in the fridge for up to 3 days.

Description

Heavenly French tomato tart is the perfect dinner dish made from puff pastry, heirloom tomatoes, Emmental cheese, chives and mustard.


Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 shortcrust pastry
  • 2 tbsp of mustard
  • 1 cup of grated Emmental cheese
  • 3 medium heirloom tomatoes (sliced)
  • Salt & black pepper to taste

  • Olive oil
