What is Filipino Mango Ice Cream?

Filipino mango ice cream is a simple fruit ice cream made with sweet mangoes. As the story goes, ice cream was introduced in the Philippines in 1899 by American M.A. Clarke when he opens the first ice cream shop in Place Moraga in Manila. At the time, ice cream was only for the elite and became somewhat of a status symbol.

The Philippines are known as being one of the best places on Earth to eat mangoes. When visiting the Philippines, make sure to try carabao mangoes, sometimes also called Philippine mango or Manila mango. These incredible mangoes are renowned for their sweetness and are perfect for making Filipino mango ice cream.

No matter where you are in the world, you can make Filipino mango ice cream with the sweet mangoes you have on hand.

Tips & Substitutions

  • Use a ripe mango for the ice cream recipe! This recipe will work best, and your ice cream will have the most amazing flavor, if you use a perfectly ripe mango.
  • Swap coconut milk for regular milk. We personally love coconut milk and feel it is easier to digest, but if you don’t have it on hand, or prefer regular milk, you can easily swap out coconut milk for regular milk.
  • Swap out coconut syrup for honey. If you don’t have coconut syrup at home, you can also make a 1:1 honey substitution.
  • Make Filipino mango float ice cream by adding crushed graham crackers to the mixture and topping with caramel sauce.
  • Serve right away. This ice cream will be best to eat as soon as it is ready. You can keep it in the freezer, but it will taste it’s absolute best as soon as you prepare it.
