We recently had the joy of sampling chocolate mousse at the Chapon chocolate mousse bar in Saint Germain. Saying it was Heavenly is actually an understatement. The creamy, rich, delicious chocolate mousse is a great reason to go for a walk across Paris (as if you needed one) to have a delicious scoop.
The Chapon chocolate mousse bar was first developed for the Salon du Chocolat in 2006. Rather than choosing between different types of mousse flavors (think pistachio, strawberry, etc.), at the chocolate mousse bar you choose between different types of chocolate, from different countries.
Which one will you choose?
- 75% chocolate mousse from Madagascar
- Chocolate mousse from Ecuador
- 100% chocolate mousse from Venezuela
- Chocolate mousse from Peru
- Chocolate mousse mixture – a combo of chocolates from Ecuador and Ghana
- 75-77% chocolate mousse from Venezuela
Location, location, location
We love all the neighborhoods of Paris (I realize we are biased, we just love Paris so much), but the Chapon chocolate mousse bar is in a prime location in Saint Germain des Près, just across the street from the Saint Sulpice church. If you’re facing the front of Saint Sulpice, look left and you will see an inviting chocolate brown facade and doorway with a bright pink flamingo statue (part of the adorable Chapon packaging) peeking out at you. Run, don’t walk, to go and get your chocolate mousse fix.
Although we visited the boutique in the 6th, Chapon has other boutiques all over the city, and even a boutique in Japan. Chapon chocolate is also now being distributed through the US and Canada, although you’ll wanted to sample it in the heart of Paris even if you’ve eaten it elsewhere in my opinion.
In addition to the gorgeous chocolate mousse, you can buy homemade marshmallows, amazing hot chocolate and beautiful boxes of chocolate in the boutique.
What makes Chapon chocolate different?
One of the things that makes Chapon chocolate so incredible is the high cacao percentage in every bar of chocolate and thereby, in their chocolate mousse. What does the percentage of chocolate mean? The percentage label tells you how much of the chocolate, by weight, is produced from the cocoa beans.
In addition to the Chapon boutiques, they now even have a food truck!
Our chocolate recommendations
We tried several different chocolates from the bar and didn’t have a favorite – we loved them all. Each chocolate has its own taste and accents – floral, fruity, woody and more! When you visit, make sure that you ask for recommendations from the staff. They are very well versed in chocolate and will spend time explaining the different taste accents you can expect in each type of chocolate.
Even though the idea of drinking hot chocolate while eating chocolate mousse may seem like a bit much, do it! We shared a hot chocolate on the side of our chocolate mousse and we were so full but it was absolutely worth it. Definitely one of my favorite hot chocolates I have ever had along with the traditional African hot chocolate at Angelina’s.
If you live in Paris or come here regularly, perhaps you could come back several times to try different chocolate mousses and the hot chocolate.
Pin for later!
